CHAPTER 4

Dusty slid his key into the lock and opened the door as gently and quietly as possible. He didn’t know if Philip was home, but if he was asleep, Dusty was happy to leave him that way. He’d been pounding the pavement for hours, checking shop windows, bulletin boards, cafes, coffeehouses, anything and everything that might have possible leads to a job. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to see Philip, he was just nervous in a way he wasn’t used to being with him.

Dusty slipped off his sandals, then moved to set his guitar in the corner. He startled when there was movement on the couch.

“Shit, man. I thought you were another creepy crawler.” The laughter left his voice when Philip’s face became clearer in the dim light of the small windows high in the corners of the room, his torso turned to see Dusty as he sat on the couch. Dusty tried to lighten the mood, anxiety rising with the agonized look on Philip’ face. “Did Mrs. Schmidt forget to pay the lights again?”

“I’m sorry,” Philip said. He twisted to look up at Dusty, his eyes pained and shadowed.

“About us…I told them about us.”

There was nothing Philip could have said that would have surprised Dusty any more than that. Dusty’s heart skipped a beat and his mouth went dry. “You what? Did you say you—shit.”

He forewent the beer, crouching at Philip’s feet instead, smoothing a hand over his thigh. Philip covered his fingers, pulling Dusty quickly to his feet, then into his lap. Dusty shifted so he was beside him on the couch, never breaking the contact. Philip buried his nose in Dusty’s hair as soon as their bodies pressed together.

“Are you all right?” Dusty asked. He squeezed Philip harder.

“Stupid question, right? I’m bummed I wasn’t there with you. I should have been there, babe. I’m sorry.”

Heartbeats turned into minutes that multiplied by ten, then fifteen until Philip pulled away. He swiped shaky fingers over his face, his eyes distant as he gazed at Dusty.

“Had to be done, you know?”

Dusty slid a hand behind Philip’s neck, massaging the tight muscles and tendons as he sought a firm way to reassure him.

Philip wasn’t generally the emotional one in their relationship, and Dusty didn’t want to say, to do, the wrong thing. He chose his words carefully, trying to keep them light but reassuring. “I dig that. Didn’t go well, huh? Kind of how we always
