CHAPTER 4
Dusty slid his key into the lock and opened the door as gently and quietly as possible. He didnât know if Philip was home, but if he was asleep, Dusty was happy to leave him that way. Heâd been pounding the pavement for hours, checking shop windows, bulletin boards, cafes, coffeehouses, anything and everything that might have possible leads to a job. It wasnât like he didnât want to see Philip, he was just nervous in a way he wasnât used to being with him.
Dusty slipped off his sandals, then moved to set his guitar in the corner. He startled when there was movement on the couch.
âShit, man. I thought you were another creepy crawler.â The laughter left his voice when Philipâs face became clearer in the dim light of the small windows high in the corners of the room, his torso turned to see Dusty as he sat on the couch. Dusty tried to lighten the mood, anxiety rising with the agonized look on Philipâ face. âDid Mrs. Schmidt forget to pay the lights again?â
âIâm sorry,â Philip said. He twisted to look up at Dusty, his eyes pained and shadowed.
Dusty stepped a little closer. âHey, itâs cool. We can talk it out, right?â
Philip bowed his head, his expression darkening even more as he clasped his hands in his lap. Dusty was at a loss for words.
Philip beat him to it anyway.
âI told them.â
Dusty shrugged. âNo worries. We donât have to draw this out, P. How about a brew? You look like you need a drink, and maybe some light?â he asked with a chuckle as he turned toward the kitchen. âOr do you have something better planned to make it up to me.â
âAbout usâ¦I told them about us.â
There was nothing Philip could have said that would have surprised Dusty any more than that. Dustyâs heart skipped a beat and his mouth went dry. âYou what? Did you say youâshit.â
He forewent the beer, crouching at Philipâs feet instead, smoothing a hand over his thigh. Philip covered his fingers, pulling Dusty quickly to his feet, then into his lap. Dusty shifted so he was beside him on the couch, never breaking the contact. Philip buried his nose in Dustyâs hair as soon as their bodies pressed together.
âAre you all right?â Dusty asked. He squeezed Philip harder.
âStupid question, right? Iâm bummed I wasnât there with you. I should have been there, babe. Iâm sorry.â
Heartbeats turned into minutes that multiplied by ten, then fifteen until Philip pulled away. He swiped shaky fingers over his face, his eyes distant as he gazed at Dusty.
âHad to be done, you know?â
Dusty slid a hand behind Philipâs neck, massaging the tight muscles and tendons as he sought a firm way to reassure him.
Philip wasnât generally the emotional one in their relationship, and Dusty didnât want to say, to do, the wrong thing. He chose his words carefully, trying to keep them light but reassuring. âI dig that. Didnât go well, huh? Kind of how we always
